Neutrino Astronomy with the Icecube Observatory and Implications for Astroparticle Physics
نویسنده
چکیده
The IceCube Observatory is a km neutrino telescope currently under construction at the geographic South Pole. It will comprise 4800 optical sensors deployed on 80 vertical strings between 1450 and 2450 meters under the ice surface. Currently IceCube is operational and recording data with 40 strings (i.e. 2400 optical sensors). The IceCube Observatory will collect an unprecedented number of high energy neutrinos that will allow us to pursue studies of the atmospheric neutrino flux, and to search for extraterrestrial sources of neutrinos, whether point-like or unresolved. IceCube results will have an important impact on neutrino astrophysics, especially if combined with observations done with other cosmic messengers, such as γ rays or ultra high energy cosmic rays. They may also reveal clues on the origin of cosmic rays at ultra high energies. Here we report results from AMANDA and the most recent results from the first 22 strings of IceCube. http://www.icecube.wisc.edu/collaboration/authorlists/2008/4.html

Astroparticle Physics with High Energy Neutrinos: from AMANDA to IceCube
Kilometer-scale neutrino detectors such as IceCube are discovery instruments covering nuclear and particle physics, cosmology and astronomy. Examples of their multidisciplinary missions include the search for the particle nature of dark matter and for additional small dimensions of space. In the end, their conceptual design is very much anchored to the observational fact that Nature produces pr...
متن کاملSwift follow - up of IceCube triggers , and implications for the Advanced - LIGO era
Between 2011 March and 2014 August Swift responded to 20 triggers from the IceCube neutrino observatory, observing the IceCube 50% confidence error circle in X-rays, typically within 5 hours of the trigger. No confirmed counterpart has been detected. We describe the Swift follow up strategy and data analysis and present the results of the campaign. We discuss the challenges of distinguishing th...
متن کاملGamma Ray Astronomy With IceCube
We demonstrate that the South Pole kilometer-scale neutrino observatory IceCube can detect multi-TeV gamma rays continuously over a large fraction of the southern sky. While not as sensitive as pointing atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes, IceCube can roughly match the sensitivity of Milagro. Also, IceCube is complementary to Milagro because it will observe, without interruption, a relatively poorl...
متن کاملFrom AMANDA to IceCube: Neutrino Astronomy at the South Pole
AMANDA at the South Pole has been the world’s largest high-energy neutrino telescope. It is now an integral part of the IceCube neutrino observatory presently under construction at the same location. A summary of the recent results from AMANDA is presented and a report on the first two construction seasons of the IceCube telescope is given.

Astronomy and particle astrophysics with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory benefit from tau neutrino detection. Tau neutrinos produce distinct, nearly background free electromagnetic showers within the volume of IceCube. The search for tau neutrino extragalactic point sources requires accurate event reconstruction. Utilizing LED flashers within IceCube allows for the simulation and calibration o...
